Following a major breach on this canal on 16th
October 2007, British Waterways have been looking
into the options for reopening the waterway and the
impact of its closure.
The seriousness of
the breach and the location where it occurred in
Gilwern has led British Waterways to carry out a
detailed geotechnical survey of a 16-mile stretch of
the canal, from Llanover to Talybont (bridges 84 to
141). Initial assessments indicate that significant
work is required to secure the canal infrastructure
and therefore the canal will not be available for
cruising in 2008’.
Julie Sharman,
General Manager for Wales & Border Counties,
explained in a press release dated 12th November
2007; "Our top priority is to secure the future and
safety of this canal, which is arguably one of the
most beautiful and popular cruising waterways in
Britain. We are increasingly of the view that the
best option for the canal is to carry out a major
programme of renovation across the central 16-mile
length.
This means that
unfortunately we are unable to take any bookings for
2008.
Whilst we are not
going to be open for 2008 we feel that the
commitment made by British Waterways to the future
of this canal is excellent news and will ensure that
it can be enjoyed by many for years to come. Due to
the closure of this popular canal 2009 is likely to
be an extremely busy year and we are already
receiving enquiries and bookings. We are
currently holding 2008 prices for 2009 and these
are below. We would encourage you to book early and
hopefully get the boat and week of your choice.
